Pottery Is An Essential Part Of The Lives Of The Hopi Indians In The A
Pottery is an essential part of the lives of the Hopi Indians in the Arizona region. They have dwelled in this region from about 1100 A.D and have created some excellent pottery since then. Although the same artistic techniques have been renewed in each pottery, the styles have changed within the years. In 450 A.D, the Moki, the Hopi word for "the peaceful ones," developed the first attempts of pottery after meeting the Mogollon Indians. Thick-walled, gray, undecorated pottery began to appear within the Hopi community around 400 A.D to 700 A.D. Kana-a and Second Mesa were black on white pottery styles that emerged during the time period of 700 A.D to 1000 A.D. These consisted of geometric shapes, such as triangles, lines, bands, and scrolls. Soon three and four color polychrome pottery began to develop during the 1300's. The most praised era of the Hopi pottery is called the Sikyatki Polychrome; the following forms were the Payupki, Polacca, and San Bernardo polychrome styles. These consisted of black on red, black and red on white, red, and black on orange colors. Although colors of the pottery have changed, the shapes of these vessels have not evolved. Bowls, jars, are the two typical shapes of Hopi pottery. Others include vases, canteens, pitchers, plates, seed jars, and effigies . There are three basic forms also: equal width and height, tall and narrow, and short and wide. Most Hopi pottery have rims that are curved inward and are typically shallow. The circumference of the midpoint of the sides of the pottery is usually the largest. In history, it was the job of the Hopi women to make the pottery. It was seen as "unmanly" to work with clay to create bowls and jars. However, now in Hopi communities, men are also potters. The size of the pottery now are smaller than pottery of long ago. Pottery, the only artifacts left to tell the tale of the lives of the Hopi Indians of long ago also reflect the changes of society. Hopi pottery has always been constructed with the coiling method. The Native Americans gather clay from their sacred tribal land and then sift and clean the clay. Along with temper, a thickening material that can be anything from sand to quartz to prevent the pottery from shrinking while being fired, and water, the clay is mixed and constructed into a beautiful shape. The clay is taken, bit by bit, and rolled into a sausage. Layer by layer, they are stacked, blended with the previous layer and slowly the pottery takes its shape. After the pot has taken its shape, a slip, find sand or clay mixture, is applied to the surface of the pottery. After it has been polished and perfected, it is fired. There are two ways of firing pottery: oxidizing or reducing. While the pottery is being oxidized, oxygen gets to the pottery. In the reduction method, the vessel is completely covered with broken pieces of old pottery and dung. After the pottery has been fired in the outdoor ovens for approximat ely four hours, it is then decorated. Black paint for the vessels are made from boiling Beeweed for a very long time until it is sufficiently thick and dark. Afterwards, it is dried as little cakes and wrapped in cornhusk for later usage; these are called guaco. The other colors are extracted from plants found on their territory. Geometric shapes and naturalistic drawings are delicately drawn on the surface and inside the pottery. After the paint has dried, a masterpiece has been completed. The symbols designed on the art pieces represent various things within their Hopi community. The star represents the sipapu, which means the place of origin. Each design used represents something also. A whole pottery design could symbolize something also. The usage of the colors represent the continuity of their tradition within the Hopi community. Certain designs also represent the emancipation of the artist's spirit. Hopi pottery is an essential part of the history of these Native Americans. The Gender Pay Gaps The U.K gender pay gap is nowadays one of the highest of Europe. Men earn 21, 1% more than woman, based on the average difference between gross hourly earnings (figure 1, statistics.gov.uk, 2009). Even if the pay gap between men and women has fallen quite dramatically over the past 30 years, the headline masks some less positive developments in recent years. UK is used to each generation of women making progress relative to the one before. But this process has slowed with the current generation doing only slightly better than the previous one. After several researches, the complexity of the topic arises; many factors and proofs demonstrate this inequality, thus leading to a high diversity of opinions. This gap varies according to the kind of work; in April 2009 hourly rates for men were à £12.97 for full-timers, à £7.71 for part-timers. For women, hourly rates were à £11.39 for full-timers, à £7.86 for part-timers (R. Barnett, Sky News, 2010). Between the private sector and the public sector, the gap is considerably changing. In 2008, in the private sector the pay gap was 21.7 % while in the public sector it was 13.8 % (The Times, 2008). Paradoxically, as point the Office of National Statistics in 2009, full-times 16-17 years-old females earned 12.6% more than males, on the other hand, part-times females earned 1.3% less than males. Thus, surveys underline real contradictions existing in the English system of payment. The goal of this essay is first to review the possible causes and origins of this inequality by analysing the political and socio-cultural values of United Kingdom relating the pay gap, and secondly show the measures that should and could be taken to fight it. The first part treats of the major discrimination facing females, the stereotyping of womens careers, perception of womens work, and how social roots act on todays women life. In the second part we talk first about the precedent government actions, then the actual actions and state of mind of UK, and the European precautions to fight the pay gap. 1- The reasons of this pay gap. Many causes can explain the pay gap existing in United Kingdom; recent researchers have pursued a number of hypotheses, sometimes exploiting unique features of specific data sets, in attempts to answer this question. The trade Union Congress (TUC) in its report of 2008 explained the UK actual pay gap in terms of 4 explanations. 36% of the pay gap could be explained by differences in lifetimes working patterns, 18 % is caused by labour market rigidities, 38% is caused by direct discrimination and individuals careers preferences, and 8% is caused by the fact that older women had power educational attainment. Discrimination is the most current argument used to explain the gender pay gap. Evidences from a range of sources indicate that recruitment and selection processes, and a substantial degree of job stereotyping, perpetuate an industry profile in which the men dominate the high-earning jobs and women the low-earning jobs. William Faulkner’s ââ¬ÅA Rose for Emilyââ¬Â
William Faulkner's ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠was originally published in the April 30, 1930, issue of Forum. It was his first short story published in a major magazine. A slightly revised version was published in two collections of his short fiction, These 13 (1931) and Collected Stories (1950). It has been published in dozens of anthologies as well. ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠is the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emilyââ¬â¢s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, and the town of Jefferson, and the horrible secret she hides. The storyââ¬â¢s subtle complexities continue to inspire critics while casual readers find it one of Faulknerââ¬â¢s most accessible works. The popularity of the story is due in no small part to its gruesome ending. Faulkner often used short stories to ââ¬Å"flesh outâ⬠the fictional kingdom of Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, for his novels. In fact, he revised some of his short fiction to be used as chapters in those novels. ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠takes place in Jefferson, the county seat of Yoknapatawpha. Jefferson is a critical setting in much of Faulknerââ¬â¢s fiction. The character of Colonel Sartoris plays a role in the story; he is also an important character in the history of Yoknapatawpha. However, ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠is a story that stands by itself. Faulkner himself modestly referred to it as a ââ¬Å"ghost story,â⬠but many critics recognize it as an extraordinarily versatile work. As Frank A. Comparing Awakenings in Chopins The Storm and The Story of an Hour As a forerunner of the modern feminist movement, Kate Chopin explored bold new characterizations of her female subjects. Chopin is famous for her progressive depiction of the female characters in her stories. Two such stories, The Storm and The Story of an Hour, examine and refute the long held ideal of the subservient wife. The Storm, written in 1898 but not published until later because of its provocative content, describes the passionate extramarital affair between Calixta and Alcee, a former lover. The Story of an Hour follows Louise Mallard as she deals with the death of her husband. Since Calixta?s awakening comes through a sexual encounter, many argue that the sex she shares with Alcee is the birthright she discovers. By describing a previous encounter they shared in Assumption, Chopin shows that while the sex leads Calixta to her discovery, the breakthrough goes deeper than merely sex. The passion that Calixta finds within herself springs from this very self-awareness and freedom. With the passing of the storm and the departure of Alcee, Calixta does not revert to her subordinate housewife bonds. Instead, she uses her awakening to discover newfound happiness in her marriage and duties as a wife and mother. When Bobinot and Bibi return, the reader sees a different Calixta than the downtrodden, worried, and selfless Calixta from the beginning of the story. Macbeth as a Shakespearean Tragic Hero In this essay I will explore the theory made by A.C Bradley, that each of Shakespeares man characters, are tragic heroes. This is that at the start of play, the character is usually somebody of high status; for example, Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis and he has a very high reputation for being a hero in war. Then as in A.C Bradleys theory, his character starts to flaw and eventually at the end of the play he dies. I will compare this essay to that theory and see whether the theory is correct.
